Antique Chinese Calligraphy Ink Block w/ Pine Tree Motifs;
Up for sale is the rare antique Chinese
鮑乾元
calligraphy ink block, dated early 19
th
century. The whole ink block was delicately designed in the shape of a pine tree, composed of a trunk with hexagonal barks, golden brownish branches, and green needles. Notably, part of the branches also has the hexagonal barks. The front of the ink block has marked in intaglio with the “
墨出青松煙
” in Clerical script (
隸書
), which came originally from a poem of
曹植
“
墨出青松煙
,
筆出狡兔翰
;
古人感鳥跡
,
文字有改判
”. The back of the ink block is marked in intaglio “
萬笏軒主人按輕膠十萬杵法秘製
” in Regular script (
楷書
) in
golden brownish color
. On the top is marked in intaglio with “
鮑乾元雲記
” in Regular script in white color.
鮑乾元
was a renowned inkstick maker in the periods of Qianlong and Jiaqing Emperors. Mr.
周紹良
(1917-2005), a scholar in many fields
who also published several inksticks-related books,
said that “
鮑乾元墨肆似創設於乾隆年間，道光初年
(1820)
已為人接替，加
[
雲記
]
字樣
”.
As shown,
萬笏軒主人
was obviously the maker of the ink block. However, what was his relationship to the
鮑乾元雲記
is not known yet.
Measures: Dimensions, 9” long x 3” wide x 1 ¾” deep; Weight, 30.5 oz. (864.6 grams). Condition: Very good; encased in a box, with crazing to surfaces consistent with its old age; one latch on the box for closing is missing.
